How unlocking works
Most Artifact codes are engraved on hidden stone tablets scattered through the world. Enter a code at the Compound Generator beneath Sky Meadow, then interact with the laptop; a portal to that Artifact's trial inside Bulwark's Ambry spawns. The Compound Generator also appears in Helminth Hatchery, the alternative Stage 5.

After unlocking
An unlocked Artifact can be toggled on at the start of any run. In multiplayer the unlocked Artifacts of everyone in the lobby are pooled, so the team can enable any Artifact anyone has unlocked.

What an artifact actually changes
Artifacts are not items and they are not equipment. Nothing about them takes an inventory slot, and you never find one mid-run. They are rule changes you switch on before the run begins, which is why two players with the same survivors and the same luck can play completely different games.
That also makes them the cleanest way to set your own difficulty. Some artifacts remove convenience — a run where the ordinary chest-and-shrine loop is replaced by drops is a different economic game. Others simply make the world less forgiving. Because you choose the set yourself, an artifact run is the closest the game comes to a self-authored ruleset.
The unlock loop, step by step
- 1Find a hidden stone tablet. Each one carries the code for one artifact, and they are scattered rather than placed on a fixed route, so a new run is where the search starts.
- 2Carry the code to the Compound Generator. The known locations are beneath Sky Meadow and, on the alternative Stage 5, in Helminth Hatchery.
- 3Use the laptop at the generator. That opens the portal to that artifact’s trial inside Bulwark’s Ambry.
- 4Clear the trial. Surviving it is what actually unlocks the artifact; once it is unlocked you can toggle it on at the start of any run.
