The short version
Risk of Rain 2 has 4 paid expansions. Each one adds survivors, stages, enemies, bosses and items to the pool, and each one ships alongside a patch whose contents are free for every player — new skills, balance passes and systems. That split matters when you are deciding what to buy: you already received part of every release whether or not you paid for it.
None of the expansions requires another one. They stack: with all four enabled you draw from the combined item pool, which is why a lobby with every expansion feels like a different game rather than a bigger one.

What you actually get for the money
- Survivors are the headline, and they are owner-only. Every expansion adds characters, and characters are the one thing a lobby cannot share — a friend can play on your stages with your items, but they cannot pick your new survivor.
- Stages, enemies and items are shared. One owner in the lobby is enough to make an expansion's content appear for everybody, which is why playing with a group changes what buying an expansion is worth to you.
- The patch beside it is not gated. New skills for existing survivors, balance changes and new systems land for everyone on the same day, whether or not they bought anything.
- Unlocks still require play. Owning an expansion unlocks its survivors where the developer says so and gates the rest behind in-game conditions, so buying one is not the same as having its full content available.
The free half of each release
The pattern has been consistent: every paid expansion arrives with a patch that changes the base game for everyone. The most recent example is patch 1.21, which shipped with Hallowed Concepts and gave six of the original survivors a new skill, each with its own unlock condition, plus the optional Karma system for the final confrontation on the moon.
That patch is also where most balance changes land, including fixes and adjustments aimed at older content. If you have stopped playing, the free half is usually the reason to come back rather than the paid half.
Frequently asked
- How many expansions does Risk of Rain 2 have?
- 4. Survivors of the Void arrived in 2022, Seekers of the Storm in 2024, Alloyed Collective in 2025 and Hallowed Concepts in 2026.
- Which expansion should I buy first?
- Buy the one whose content you actually want to play, because none of them is a prerequisite for the others. If you want a single recommendation: Survivors of the Void is the one that changes the item pool most, and Alloyed Collective comes with the drone roster.
- Do I need the expansions to play with friends who have them?
- No. Only one player in a lobby needs to own an expansion for its monsters, stages and items to appear for everyone — but the survivors added by that expansion stay selectable only for owners.
- Is any of this content free?
- The patch content that ships alongside each expansion is free for every player. The 1.21 release is the clearest example: a new skill for six original survivors and the Karma system arrived without buying anything.
- Do the expansions go on sale?
- They do, and the prices on this page are list prices rather than today’s figure. Check the store listing before deciding, because the discount is often larger than the difference between releases.
